- Cool idea from attendee: "Genius Hour"- one hour per week allow 3rd graders to research whatever they are interested in, then they present to the class.
- Culturegrams? A resource their district uses. It's a subscription-based.
- In their district all kids have 1:1 ipads in K-4.
- They use iCard Sort so they can do Words Their Way word sorts without having to cut out the words on paper. The teacher can blast out the words to the student accounts.
- Flip your lid routine or flip over iPad so they cannot see the screen. Using common language across all teachers. "Flip your lid in 5..4..3..2..1." Have a consequence if they don't have it flipped by 0 or else they get a "strike".
- Have a location where they can store their ipads away from their desks. Buckets, for example.
- Poster for login procedures.
- Have a protocol for what to do when a student is having a problem. For example, if you have a problem go to the back table. Don't yell out. Prior to even teaching anything with the iPad have your kids know that this is something new for you too, there are going to be problems, they can help you the teacher by trying to problem solve quietly and if it doesn't work out take out a silent reading book and wait for help from teacher.
- Parents pay a $75 insurance fee each year. Each kid is then allowed one broken iPad and any extras get paid by parents. They gave out ipads 2 weeks after year started.
BLOOM'S TAXONOMY
- Kids can really contruct their own knowledge to learn basic facts for lower levels of knowledge. They give an example of learning about dairy farms. The teachers provided a page w/ info and links for research but the kids explore independently. This way they are exposed to more non-fiction reading. The teacher is more of a facilitator for higher level thinking.
- iCard Sort is an app they use for organization. It's like wallwisher where they can organize post its.
- They also use Educreations app so kids can record their voice and text on ipad to explain their thinking. Check out her video on this page.
- Educreations is a great tool for homework. They do one problem and explain how they solved it as they do it on the screen. See their example video of how they demo .44 w/ hundred blocks, tens and units. Students can have accounts through Educreations and teachers can see what they've posted.
MODIFYING CURRENT RESOURCES
- Paper to PDF
- PDF to App
- They use Paperport Notes for PDF annotation, it's free. NEU.annotate is another good resource. PaperPort allows for speaking into it and recording.
- Popplet is great for learning vocab. Vocab word goes in the middle, synonym, part of speech, picture, use it in a sentence etc are "spokes"
